If you’ve been feeling emotionally drained, energetically heavy, or like your nervous system has been running on iced coffee and pure determination, Reiki may be a beautiful place to begin.

Reiki is a gentle energy healing practice designed to support relaxation, emotional balance, and energetic alignment. It is often used as a complementary holistic wellness practice for people who want to feel more grounded, peaceful, and connected to themselves.

What Is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese energy healing technique that works with the body’s energy system. During a Reiki session, the practitioner gently places their hands near or lightly on the body, or offers Reiki from a distance during a virtual Reiki session.

The intention is to support the body’s natural ability to relax, restore, and rebalance. Reiki is not about forcing healing or “fixing” you. It creates a calm, supportive space where your mind, body, and spirit can soften. According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, Reiki is considered a complementary health approach, and research on its effectiveness is still limited and mixed. (NCCIH)

What Is Distance Reiki?

Distance Reiki, also called virtual Reiki or remote Reiki, allows you to receive Reiki energy healing from the comfort of your own space. Your practitioner does not need to be physically present with you.

A virtual Reiki session may take place through video conferencing and usually includes a short check-in, the Reiki treatment, and a closing reflection. You can relax in bed, sit in a quiet room, light a candle, grab a blanket, or simply show up exactly as you are. No perfect spiritual setup required. Your laundry pile does not block energy, thankfully.

What Can Reiki Support?

Many people book Reiki sessions for:

  • Stress relief

  • Emotional balance

  • Energetic clearing

  • Deep relaxation

  • Nervous system support

  • Spiritual connection

  • Chakra balancing

  • Feeling grounded and centered

  • Support during life transitions

  • Reconnecting with themselves

Reiki is especially supportive when you feel overwhelmed, disconnected, burned out, emotionally heavy, or unsure how to slow down.

What to Expect During a Reiki Session

Every Reiki practitioner works a little differently, but a virtual Reiki session often includes three parts:

1. A Short Intake or Check-In

You’ll begin by sharing how you’re feeling, what you’re moving through, and what you’d like support with. This helps set the intention for the session.

2. The Reiki Treatment

During the Reiki portion, you’ll be invited to get comfortable and relax. You may feel warmth, tingling, emotional release, heaviness, lightness, calm, or you may simply feel still. There is no “right” way to receive Reiki.

3. A Closing Check-In

After the treatment, you’ll reconnect with your practitioner to discuss how you feel, anything that came up, and any grounding practices that may support you afterward.

How to Prepare for a Virtual Reiki Session

Before your distance Reiki session, choose a quiet, comfortable space where you can relax without interruption.

You may want to have:

  • Water nearby

  • A blanket or pillow

  • A journal

  • Soft music

  • A candle

  • Crystals or spiritual tools if you use them

But truly, all you need is yourself. Reiki can meet you in cozy socks, messy buns, and “I barely made it here” energy.

What to Do After Reiki

After a Reiki session, your energy may continue shifting for 24–48 hours. Support yourself with gentle aftercare.

Try to:

  • Drink water

  • Rest if you feel tired

  • Journal any emotions or insights

  • Spend time in nature

  • Avoid rushing into heavy tasks

  • Notice what comes up without judgment

  • Give yourself permission to move slowly

This is integration time. Your energy is not a microwave meal. Let it simmer.

Is Reiki a Replacement for Medical Care?

No. Reiki is a complementary holistic wellness practice and should not replace medical care, mental health treatment, therapy, medication, diagnosis, or professional healthcare advice.

It can be a supportive addition to your self-care and spiritual wellness routine, but it should be used alongside appropriate care from licensed healthcare providers when needed. NCCIH notes that Reiki has not been clearly shown to be effective for health-related purposes, though it has not been shown to have harmful effects. (NCCIH)

Who Is Reiki For?

Reiki may be a good fit if you are craving:

  • A peaceful reset

  • Emotional grounding

  • Spiritual support

  • A deeper connection with yourself

  • A softer way to process stress

  • Time to pause, breathe, and receive

You do not have to be deeply spiritual to benefit from a Reiki session. You can be intuitive, curious, skeptical, exhausted, hopeful, or somewhere in the middle. All are welcome.
