1. Spend time with Mother Nature.
Research has found that spending time in nature has a profound effect on our immune system. Being outdoors provides a natural source of negative ions and vitamin D. Spending time in nature can also provide benefits for our mental and spiritual health as well. Bonus: Spending time outdoors is usually a fun way to get out of the house while maintaining social distancing.
2. Find ways to decrease your stress levels.
Stress is one of the leading causes of illness. It wreaks havoc on our immune system and impairs the body's ability to heal itself. Some easy ways to destress include meditation, therapy, journaling, and implementing a non-negotiable self-care routine.
3. Increase your probiotic intake.
Fermented foods are rich in beneficial bacteria known as probiotics. The majority of your immune system is located in the digestive tract. Probiotics help to create & maintain a healthy network of functional cells. Probiotics can be found in yogurts, kombucha teas, and other fermented foods.
4. Sleep.
Sleep is imperative to a healthy, functional immune system. It's the one time during the day that our bodies can fully rejuvenate and heal. Aim for a minimum of 7 hours per night for optimal health.
5. Exercise.
Exercise slows down the release of stress hormones. We've already discussed how stress increases the chance of illness. Lower stress hormones helps to protect against illness. Exercise naturally improves our physical health which creating a healthy, balanced body.
6. Hydrate.
Think of your body as a massive filtration system. Fluids (ie water) works to flush your system. Without adequate fluid, everything slows down and forces your organs to work harder to process and remove toxins.
7. Eat more fruits & veggies!
Plant-based foods are known for their high antioxidant properties. They're usually high in Vitamin C which has been shown to strengthen the immune system. Fruits & Veggies are high in fiber which also assist in removing waste from the body.
